Why sulfur compounds have a foul smell?

    Sulfur compounds commonly have a very foul smell. As much I can remember some examples are as follows –

    1. H2S
    2. Garlic
    3. Marcaptan
    4. Naphthalene
    5. Rotten foods
    6. Onion

    What can be the cause of such peculiar behavious in sulfur compounds?

    My opinion is that, on putrefaction body proteins liberate H2S. As the organisms and their toxins are harmful to our health the nature has devised the mechanism to smell those compounds bad.

     

    Moreover not all sulfur compounds are foul smelling. So this generalization is not completely true.
